OEMs and BLM Automatic Clutch: Partners for Centrifugal Solutions Success!

We love working with OEMs! Throughout our experience providing centrifugal solutions, BLM has partnered with all types of manufacturers, providing the best solutions for their centrifugal clutch needs. Why do we enjoy working with equipment manufacturers so much? When we work with OEMs, we usually get the opportunity to start our working relationship at the very beginning of a project, when we can really dive into the project and play an integral role in the equipment’s design from the very beginning. We enjoy partnering with OEMs from start to finish – from the initial stages of the equipment’s design, right through the manufacturing phase, and eventually to its application and use. BLM always provides centrifugal clutch solutions that are appropriate and fine-tuned for specific applications.

Keep in mind that there are a lot of details and specs involved in equipment manufacturing. But that’s what makes our role in our partnerships with OEMs so enjoyable – and so critical. Our experience has set us up to understand and accommodate an OEM’s needs and special requests, from start to finish through any project that includes a centrifugal clutch, and we take great pride in providing the most economical solutions. Working with us, OEMs also have the opportunity to customize their centrifugal clutches, as well, and we can custom paint them with a company’s colors and labeling. Additionally, to accommodate an OEM’s need for quick turnaround, BLM accepts blanket orders to facilitate the manufacturing process of centrifugal clutches.. We want our OEM customers – and everyone – to know they can always count on us to provide centrifugal solutions in a timely fashion!

One more important note: At BLM, we understand centrifugal clutches more than anyone else, and we know that every detail and every spec, no matter how small or seemingly “insignificant,” can significantly impact a centrifugal clutch and how well it functions. (See our recent blog post that talks more in-depth about how to avoid centrifugal clutch failure.)

We Disagree with Kermit-the-Frog: It IS Easy Being Green with Centrifugal Clutches

When the popular American television series Sesame Street first aired almost 46 years ago, the manufacturing industries weren’t concerned, or weren’t as concerned, with “sustainability” and with “being green,” as everyone is today. Those of us who grew up with Kermit-the-Frog singing and complaining about “being green” know he wasn’t referring to sustainability when he was singing. But now, in 2015, you hear manufacturers and companies in all industries talking about sustainability and reporting about how they’re “being green.” Some manufacturers are repeating Kermit-the-Frog’s words, and saying, “It’s not easy being green…” They’re pointing out challenges they’re facing, or mentioning some complaints about the costs and reporting requirements associated with sustainability efforts. Companies and manufacturers are looking for ways to be more sustainable and more green.

Organized efforts, initiatives, and media, regularly offer ideas and information to help companies from all industries “be green.” Greenbiz.com is one example of an information source dedicated to sustainability in business. The website says it “advances the opportunities at the intersection of business, technology and sustainability…” A recent article on the site, 10 Lessons for Future Sustainability Leaders, asks, “Is sustainability part or your core strategy?” The article continues by answering the question and saying, “To create a high-quality integrated [sustainability] report, you must answer this question affirmatively.”

custom centrifugal solutionsIf sustainability and “being green” is important to your company, and if you’re a manufacturer using centrifugal clutches, you know that centrifugal clutches make it easier to be green. As we originally reported in an industry news release six years ago, “BLM’s distinctive blue clutches have always been a green solution, long before it was politically correct. BLM has always produced an energy efficient clutch.”

Here’s an overview of how our centrifugal clutches save energy and help manufacturers “be green”: An electric motor with a centrifugal clutch starts under no load and does not engage and drive the load until it reaches near rated speed. Once up to speed, a motor has more torque to start and accelerate the load and it consumes much less current than a motor that must struggle to start under full load.

In addition to reduced electrical power consumption costs, there are other “green” benefits offered by our blue clutches:

-They’re more economical because the motor is “right-sized” and not over-sized. (See our previous blog post for more information about proper clutch size.)

-A standard motor with a clutch runs more efficiently than an oversized motor running below its full-rated load.

-Clutches can promote and increase motor life by as much as 5x due to the shortened high-current draw saving motor insulation and windings.

Take a look at our website to learn more about how centrifugal clutches are a green and clean alternative, and see how it IS easy to be green with centrifugal clutches.

Why For Centrifugal Clutches, Size Matters

Size matters when you’re designing and manufacturing centrifugal clutches! We know this from our experience working with our customers who have come to use from many different industries throughout the years. If you’re not already familiar with BLM Automatic Clutch, we’re a family owned company, which designs and manufactures centrifugal clutches.

custom centrifugal clutch sizesWhenever we’re designing and manufacturing centrifugal clutches for our customers, we rely on our customers to provide us with accurate information and specifications. We work closely with each customer to learn about any special or unique requirements for the clutches. Fully understanding their operations is critical in determining the right size centrifugal clutch within each specific application.

When it comes to the speed and the horsepower RPM, this information also must be accurate. If the information about the speed and horsepower is incorrect, the clutch may only partially engage but will still try to drive a full load on partial engagement resulting in clutch failure. Another possible scenario is that the running speeds are inaccurate and the clutch blows up.

Determining how many belts on a pulley application and the number of horsepower transmitted by each belt is necessary. Sometimes horsepower transmitted by manufacturer supplied equipment is insufficient to maximize the engine capacity, this results in an oversell of the size of the engine. The solution is to have more belts or a smaller engine.

Ultimately, the correct clutch size is critical for the overall performance and the longevity of a centrifugal clutch. Also having the correct clutch size can prevent damage or malfunction and costly downtime. To prevent any of these scenarios from happening we encourage our customers to share with us all accurate information and run each clutch within its intended application parameters.

We’d be happy to tell you more about why it’s so critical for manufacturers of centrifugal clutched to get accurate specifications and information from the end users of the centrifugal clutches. Reach out to us at any time with any questions you may have.

Hurricane Season Preparation and Response: BLM is Ready

For most of the country, June signals the start of summer—a carefree season of long, warm days and time spent outdoors. For the southeastern United States and the Caribbean, however, June 1 marked the start of hurricane season, and it’s something they take very seriously.

While this year’s hurricane season has been predicted to be a relatively quieter one, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says this is not an indication to be lax. In fact, they point out that, “A below-normal season doesn’t mean we’re off the hook. As we’ve seen before, below-normal seasons can still produce catastrophic impacts to communities.” *The devastating Hurricane Andrew, they reminded people, occurred during a below-normal season.

At BLM, we know all about the catastrophic effects of hurricanes, and we also know how to be prepared. Our clutches are integral components within a variety of products used in post-hurricane cleanup. Once the season is underway, we receive countless panicked calls from various municipalities, requesting our clutches immediately for their cleanup procedures.

Chippers, for instance, are used to clean up the fallen trees and branches that occur from the damaging effects of high winds. If these winds get bad enough, major structures, such as buildings, must be repaired as well, and this is where rider trowels come in. They are used for doing large concrete flooring surfaces in many buildings, including high-rises.

When roads experience damage—as they often do during a tropical storm or hurricane—plate tampers are used for packing down road surfaces and redoing the asphalt. On damaged sidewalks, curbers fix the edging and make them safe again.

Then there are the pumps, which take care of the large amounts of water, as well as the sweepers, and countless other post-disaster pieces of equipment. In all of these, BLM clutches are critical components, aiding in the recovery and bringing peace of mind back to communities.

Whether your hurricane season plan includes pre-storm preparation or post-storm response—or most likely, both—we at BLM will be ready and able to help you pick up the pieces.

Harnessing the Power of New Technology

American manufacturing industry continues to see an incredible comeback. Unfortunately, there continues to be a skilled labor shortage.

Back in 2013, it was reported that up to 600,000 manufacturing jobs were unfilled, and according to Forbes Business, “the skills gap is likely to become more acute.” These predictions proved correct.

Of course one way to combat this is through encouraging STEM education and careers, and promoting manufacturing as a career path for young Americans.

Another way of addressing the issue is by investing in better technology and innovation—processes and tools that move from manpower to machine power, meeting capacity and output demands through better equipment.

At BLM, we have certainly noticed that it’s been increasingly difficult to find qualified people to hire. As a result, we’ve responded accordingly and have invested in two new CNC machines. These state-of-the-art machines by DMC America feature the latest technology and work with the most advanced software to achieve more capacity and accuracy in a shorter period.

These new CNC machines can allow us to meet all of our clients’ needs while putting our manpower in other areas. Our employees can better focus on their individual tasks while our CNC machines can quickly and efficiently get quality work done. In this way, everyone benefits.

At BLM Automatic Clutch, we are committed to providing our customers with the very best quality clutches in the fastest, most economical way possible. By investing in new technology, we are continuing this commitment and ensuring our reputation for success is never compromised.

How Clutches Can Keep American Agriculture Growing

As the spring season comes into full effect, with summer not far behind, we’ll all be enjoying the warmth of the season, and the universal ways Americans celebrate it. So as you’re biting into that first sweet corn of the barbecue season, enjoying a fresh spring salad, or making a sweet berry pie take a moment to think about the country’s hard working farmers who make it all possible.

For instance: for every one farmer in the U.S., 144 people eat. No matter the weather every farmer works tirelessly each day to bring food to our tables. At the same time, the entire agricultural industry works to support our economy and keep America growing.
As the industry and its individual members work so hard this season and throughout the year, we at BLM support them and do our part to make their jobs easier.

That’s because our centrifugal clutches are relied upon in countless agricultural applications, keeping machinery running smoothly with minimal maintenance and downtime. You’ll find our clutches used on pumps and sprayers to provide irrigation to farmers’ fields. Our clutches are also used on sprayers to deliver nutrients and pest control to farm crops. Arborists use chippers to recycle pruned branches when pruning fruit and nut orchards.

They help power the sprayers that keep farms hydrated—at the beginning of the planting lifecycle—and later on power the combined equipment that harvests crops.

The nature of our centrifugal clutches means starting and maneuvering the machinery is easier and energy is saved in the process. Therefore operating farm equipment outfitted with BLM clutches is easy and cost effective.

The agricultural industry around the world is growing; more demand is leading to increased opportunity. This is a good thing, but it also means farmers will have to meet even greater needs while remaining exceptionally efficient. They will be relying on machinery to help ease the burden, and at BLM, we’re confident our clutches can do just that. We’ve proudly been behind these unsung American heroes, and we’ll continue to be, for generations to come.

Could a Cross-Country Pipeline Solve Problems on Both Coasts?

Recently, we’ve been hearing about a theoretical pumping solution that has been getting nationwide attention. It has a lot of people asking, “Could this really work?”

It’s a common sense idea that began from regular folks questioning and hypothesizing: can we take the overabundance of snow in Boston, and transport it to California, a state suffering from a massive drought? At first it sounds like a crazy idea, but it might actually work.

This winter, the Boston area has been pummeled with snow—constant storms dumping record levels of it. Currently, it’s estimated that the amount of snow equates to about 5 billion gallons of water.

At the same time, California is experiencing a terrible drought, and experts say that it would take 11 trillion gallons of water to reverse it. So while the 5 billion gallons of Boston’s snow is only a fraction of the 11 trillion California needs, it’s a start. But is it possible, and if so, how?

It’s been proposed that a pipeline be built from Boston to California, a distance of 2,600 miles (to Los Angeles). Rather than collecting and then dumping the snow into the harbor, the snow would be collected and sent through the pipeline, pumping it cross-country. Of course, this would involve serious amounts of money, but money is already being spent on snow removal, and the California drought is costing countless amounts of money and energy.

So it seems what began almost as a joke—send us your snow!—maybe, just maybe, could work.

It’s unknown if this theory will ever come into existence, but at BLM we know that if a 2,600-mile-long pipeline is built to help save California, our clutches will be strong and powerful enough to make it work.

A Focus On The Future: STEM Education And Awareness

It’s no secret that North American manufacturing is back in a big way. It’s growing and advancing at lightning speed, and it’s causing a ripple effect that is extremely good news for the economy.

After all, consider these statistics from NAM:
• Manufacturers contributed $2.09 trillion to the U.S. economy last year
• Manufacturing supports over 17.6 million jobs in the U.S. (and directly employs more than one in every ten working Canadians)
• For every $1.00 spent in manufacturing, another $1.37 is added back to the economy

As these numbers indicate, the North American people and economy directly benefit from a booming manufacturing sector. Additionally, as technology and innovation grow within the industry, the U.S. and Canada become more competitive and more independent.

Now consider the fact that the industry is in the midst of a skilled labor shortage. Opportunities and innovation are growing every day, and there aren’t enough people with the experience and skill to take part in them. If U.S. and Canadian manufacturers don’t have enough engineers and technology-savvy workers, what will happen to this advancement?

The answer to the problem, of course, is to promote STEM education—providing students and those entering the job market with science, technology, engineering, and math training.

According to the STEM Education Coalition, “STEM occupations will grow 1.7 times faster than non-STEM occupations,” and “the top 10 bachelor degree majors with the highest median earnings are all in STEM fields.” The fact is, STEM careers are as good for individuals as they are for the economy.

A report by the Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters states that in order to combat the fact that nearly 50% of the country’s manufacturers are experiencing labor shortages, “everyone must work more aggressively if Canada is to prosper, innovate, and take advantage of the economic opportunities over the next decade.”

Thankfully, some of the world’s biggest technology players are taking note. According to this article, Google Canada recently donated $1.5 million to an organization that brings STEM programming education to hundreds of thousands of students, while Microsoft Canada partners with non-profits that provide STEM education.

In the U.S, initiatives such as the Federal Educate to Innovate program and countless university projects are in place to bring awareness to the issue while actively educating and preparing young people. There are many private-sector programs as well, such as Emerson’s “I Love STEM”—a multimillion dollar commitment to STEM and robotics—and Intel’s $300 million pledge to sponsor STEM education.

Clearly, these industry giants are well aware of how important STEM education is to their futures. And while most of us don’t have the billions of dollars that they do, we can each do our part to promote education and training, and to prepare for the future. It’s an investment that will bring infinite rewards.

Winter is Here And Our Clutches Are Everywhere

When you live in a cold-weather climate, there are a few things you can be sure of come winter including temperatures dropping, snow falling, and our BLM clutches working every step of the way. You might not see them, or know exactly where our clutches are in use, but they’re pretty much everywhere.   BLM clutches have countless applications, especially during the winter season.

In fact, the lifecycle of a winter storm relies on our clutches. Clutches are used before a storm when salt throwers are covering the roads and after the storm, when road sweepers come to clear the snowfall.  After the storm has passed, chippers using our clutches are fed the fallen debris ensuring safer road conditions.   Finally, pumping equipment also depends on BLM clutches for flood control due to melted snow & ice.

If you’re braving the snow and are planning a winter ski trip this season, you may even be sitting on a ski lift that uses our clutches.  In fact, we supplied clutches on snow throwers at a number of ski venues including Sochi.  No matter what the ski conditions, our clutches are working so the ski resort can operate smoothly.

Perhaps you are tired of the cold and are planning a winter getaway; well you’re still not getting away from the use of clutches.  Clutches used on ski resorts’ lifts are also used for tropical islands’ gondolas.  Regardless, if you are on a ski lift being brought up a snowy mountain or on a gondola photographing a rainforest,  clutches may be ensuring your safety.

The fact is, we provide custom clutches for so many different uses, but the one factor that remains constant is our quality.  Our applications may change, but our craftsmanship never wavers.

With all of these applications, we at BLM continue to see more and more business. As a result, we continue to see the need for more skilled workers and continue to be grateful for the loyal, talented team members we have.  We’re a happy bunch and are especially happy to keep making clutches of unmatched quality that keep winter safe and fun.
