WARNING: Do Not Run Clutch With Rim Removed.

Installation – Type GMG

1. GEAR COUPLING
Place the flanged covers WITH oil seal rings on the shaft BEFORE mounting the hubs. Press or shrink hubs onto their respective shafts and use spacing below.

2. CHECK SHAFT SEPARATION AND ANGULAR ALIGNMENT
Position machines so that shaft separation is correct for the application. Obtain best possible alignment by using an inside micrometer at 90° intervals between hub faces.

3. CHECK OFFSET ALIGNMENT
Align shafts. Check with a straight edge at 2 points 90° apart. For greater accuracy, use a dial indicator. Rotate indicating shaft 360° to obtain equal reading at 4 points 90° apart.

4. INSERT GASKETS AND CLUTCH ASSEMBLY
Recheck angular alignment and distance between shaft ends before putting doweling equipment in place. Insert both gaskets and draw flanged covers into position.

5. LUBRICATE
Remove BOTH lube plugs in each cover and fill the coupling with recommended grease until an excess appears at the open hole. CAUTION: After greasing the coupling, replace both lube plugs.

6. For maintenance see Type M.

The Gear Coupling clutch is designed specifically for horizontal operation. The following is a summary of the recommended installation procedure.

Clean all parts thoroughly and then place coupling flanged covers complete with seals on the shafts. Then mount the coupling hub. Set the coupling gap to the specifications in table on page 9 and then align equipment for minimum angular and offset coupling misalignment.

Tighten unit foundation bolts, recheck alignment, and dowel units. Place the gasket between the cover flanges and clutch assembly then assemble. The gear teeth are uniformly spaced and do not require matching. Remove BOTH lube plugs in each flange, grease the coupling and then replace the lube plugs.

Lubrication
Adequate lubrication is essential for proper operation of the coupling. When lubricating, each flexible half must be separately filled. Do not use cup grease, oil or any other fluid lubricant. Use only NLGI #1 grease with the following specifications. WORK PENETRATION AT 77° F 265 370 DROPPING POINT 300° F or higher TEXTURE, Smooth or fibrous OIL BLEED RATE Table for amounts. Where ambient temperatures exceed 150°F. Consult factory for recommendations.

Geared Hubs
Check the lubricant every six months and add when required. Excessive misalignment, high ambient temperatures, and/or frequent, rapid reversing may necessitate more frequent inspections and lubrications.
